Blobs are Ethereum Layer 1’s (L1) mechanism for storing data that Layer 2 (L2) solutions rely on for data availability. Scaling the number of blobs per block is essential to support high-volume L2 applications like DeFi, gaming, social media, real-time payments, and AI. Ethereum will increase blob throughput per block using PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling).
Blob Parameter Only (BPO) Forks: These forks will automatically increase blob capacity over time.
Bandwidth Optimizations: Techniques like cell-level messaging improve data transmission efficiency.
Censorship Resistance: Blob mempool scaling ensures Ethereum’s core values are preserved.
The technology enables more efficient L2 apps with reduced fees. It also creates possibilities to build advanced DeFi, AI and gaming applications that were previously constrained by L1 limitations. This is particularly relevant to consumer-scale apps like micro-payments and social platforms where seamless user experiences depend on low-cost and high-speed interactions.
