Mulenga Kapwepwe, founder of the Women’s History Museum of Zambia, posed a question in 2022 to a group of young tech enthusiasts in Zambia: Can blockchain technology offer new solutions for preserving history? This question led to the development of SummitShare, an initiative aimed at addressing the complex issue of artifact repatriation, particularly for African heritage. Historically, a significant portion of Africa's cultural heritage is housed in European and American museums, raising questions about ownership, history, and identity. The group explored the idea of creating digital casts of artifacts as a viable alternative to physical repatriation, which is often hindered by geopolitical and logistical challenges. By linking digital artifacts to their physical originals, this method could capture and evoke a connection to heritage, creativity, and history, offering new ways to engage with cultural heritage.
Digital Repatriation and Blockchain Technology: The SummitShare initiative, co-founded by Mulenga Kapwepwe, Thomas Gondwe, Nhyira Amofa-Sekyi, and Mario Jere, aims to use blockchain technology to create digital representations of artifacts. This approach allows for the preservation and sharing of cultural heritage in a digital format, making it accessible to communities who may not have the opportunity to see the physical artifacts.
SummitShare's Inaugural Exhibit: Throughout 2024, the SummitShare team prepared for its inaugural exhibit, "Leading Ladies," which focuses on the lives and artifacts of six Zambian women who were trailblazers in various societal roles. This exhibit serves as a model for digital and physical collaboration, with museums and galleries creating exhibitions that have both physical and digital elements connected through smart contracts. This allows for unique synergies, such as ticket sales for European exhibitions supporting cultural programs in Africa. The "Leading Ladies" exhibit is associated with Zambia’s Gwembe Valley community, ensuring that the community directly benefits from the exhibit’s proceeds and engagement.
